French River Cottage Kitchen

French River, Ontario, Canada

2023

In 2019-2020 the owners decided to renovate the kitchen in their cabin on the French River in Ontario. The cabin had been built by their parents in the 1960s, on an island where their grandparents had been camping since the 1940s. Each summer they spend several months on the island, joined by their children, grandchildren, and family friends. The island is off the grid with no electricity so increasing natural light was important. They also wanted to replace the falling apart cabinets and install a durable floor that would withstand the traffic of kids and dogs.

An existing window was replaced with a larger window at the kitchen sink, and a window was added in a dark corner, adding light to the kitchen and a view to the river. Cabinets were replaced with custom built clear finish hickory cabinets. The low aged pine ceiling was removed adding height to the space and exposing the roof rafters. A charcoal color countertop and light grey flooring were added to contrast the original pine walls.
